Coaching Education Courses: Our Coaching Education courses are not currently scheduled for in person instruction. If you require immediate certification, we recommend the following two NY State approved alternates. First Aid/CPR/AED (1 credit / 15 hours) For further information on Sport First Aid courses running contact Section XI at www.sectionxi.org Ward Melville High School - Gym Entrance - First Aid is located in Room 137/CPR-AED is in the Wrestling Room 6:00 - 10:00 pm Session 1 Monday, 9/15/08 Session 2 Wednesday, 9/18/08 Session 3 Monday, 9/22/08 Session 4 Wednesday, 9/24/08 Full First Aid/CPR/AED (first time attendee) Session 1, 2, 3, 4 ALL SESSIONS MUST BE ATTENDED ! Renewal First Aid Sessions 1 and 4 Renewal CPR/AED Session 4 (This will cover annual bloodborne pathogen training) Full CPR/AED (NEW) Sessions 3 and 4 (This will cover annual bloodborne pathogen training) Tuition Fee: $90 four sessions Course Description: What to do if confronted with a variety of first aid emergencies: bleeding, wounds, shock, fracture, dislocation, strains, sprains, heat/cold, stroke, heart attack, breathing emergencies, etc. Basic First Aid procedures will be presented and practiced. All participants successfully completing the course will receive American Red Cross certification in both Standard First Aid and Community CPR (infant, child, adult). Philosophy, Principles & Organization of Athletics (3 credits/45 hours) Smithtown Site Course Description: This workshop will consider the role of athletics in the total educational program and the interrelationship of athletics with the programs of health education and physical education. The development of rules and regulations in New York State will be emphasized. This workshop is state approved to meet NYS coaching regulations. Instructor: Dr. John Foley
Coaching Techniques (1 credit / 15 hours) Smithtown Site Course Description: This course is designed primarily to meet the commissioner’s regulation and is state approved. Participants will acquire specific techniques to enhance their coaching skills. (Organizational techniques, practice and game situations, conditioning, etc.). This workshop is state approved to meet NYS coaching regulations. Instructor: Lou Carnesecca and Staff
Coaching the Coach (1 credits/15 hours) Smithtown Site Course Description: This workshop will consider the scientific principles of coaching, the selection, organization and management of teams, methods of teaching and training, administrative considerations, officials, ethics; public relations, recruiting and regulatory guidelines. This workshop is state approved to meet NYS coaching regulations. Taught by Director and former St. John's legendary coach. Instructor: Lou Carnesecca and Staff
Coaching Wrestling - Junior High School and High School Level (3 credits/45 hours) (both levels are offered) Sachem High School Summer 2008 8:00 - 5:00 pm Monday - Friday June 30 - July 4th Course Description: Motivation and dedication at the junior varsity and varsity level of competition. Special session on steroid abuse by Sports Medicine Resource of Stony Brook. Session on tournaments using single elimination, wrestle-backs and double elimination. Instructor: Jack Mahoney and Staff
Physiology of Exercise (1 credit / 15 hours) Elite Fitness 33 Vets Highway, Ronkonkoma Course Description: This workshop will review the major body systems affected by athletic participation. Training and conditioning principles and methods will be discussed, as well as special considerations for training (nutrition, heat and dehydration, body composition). This workshop is state approved to meet NYS coaching regulations. Instructors: Dr. Frank S. Segreto, M.D., P.C.
Psychology of Coaching (1 credit / 15 hours) Smithtown Site Course Description: Theories of learning, motivation for participation in athletics, controlled aggression, athletic persistence, tension and anxiety, effective leadership, and cybernetics; as well as the impact of sport in American Culture on the coach, participant, and spectators. This workshop is state approved to meet NYS coaching regulations. Instructor: Tom Howard

Current Issues in Physical Education and Athletics (3 credits/45 hours) in-service credit only Smithtown Site tbd Course Description: This workshop will focus on such current issues as coed activities, academic eligibility, selection/classification, sportsmanship, team selection, specialization, booster clubs/fund raising, coaches, the college recruiting process. gender equity, development of a philosophy of physical education and athletics and dealing with parents. Using Technology in Physical Education (1 credit/15 hours) in-service credit only NEW COURSE!!!! Lindenhurst High School tbd Course Description: Course participants will learn the best websites for physical education, internet resources for physical education classes, using technology to reduce paperwork, CD-ROM products, tips for using heart monitors and pedometers, management strategies, integrating technology and ideas for portfolios.
