Unfortunately, the amount of time that students spend in unstructured play has diminished overtime. The average amount of recess in elementary schools is 20-30 minutes according to the CDC. By the time they reach high school, there’s scant evidence of any needed built-in breaks. This course will enable participants to find the modalities to structure unstructured time into their repertoire. They will hone in on current studies, research, and tactics to motivate their students via succinct physical and mental breaks. Participants in this course will learn how to make their students feel oriented and prepared for the day’s learning via a “stop and jot” success procedure and mindset. They will learn how to create intentional pauses in their students’ learning in order to provide the brain the time to encode and organize new knowledge, as well as enable their students to deepen their understanding and reflect upon the learning experience. Their students will be able to capture their thinking at the exact moment utilizing this process and their students will have accountability for their learning in this manner.
