Course Description: The multiple benefits of recess on our students cannot be overstated, leading to improved academic outcomes, social and emotional stability, and boosts in overall well-being. Unfortunately, the amount of time that students spend in unstructured play has diminished overtime. The average amount of recess in elementary schools is 20-30 minutes according to the CDC. By the time they reach high school, there’s scant evidence of any needed built-in breaks. This course will enable participants to find the modalities to structure unstructured time into their repertoire. They will hone in on current studies, research, and tactics to motivate their students via succinct physical and mental breaks. Activities such as mindfulness, stretching, and playful games will be covered, as well as technological games and activities to set them into motion for academics.
