Reading, Writing……Arithmetic

Course Description

Have your students mastered basic math facts but are demonstrating difficulty problem solving

and communicating how the problems were solved? Computing accurately is an important

foundational skill but it does not mean the student is proficient in math. There is a direct

connection between reading comprehension, visualization, and writing for a purpose in content

areas. This course will explore various methods to teach students how to apply reading,

visualizing, and communication skills (speaking, listening, and writing) in math through research

based articles, read alouds, videos, and small group activities. (Grade k-8)

Course Requirements:

1. In-service credits (3 credit online course)

2. Read material provided &/or watch videos that pertain to the topic

3. Respond to question after each section (email answers to instructor)

Course Outline

1. Reading in math (visualization, comprehension)

2. Using a read aloud across content areas (ELA-Math)

3. Understanding academic and content vocabulary

4. Communication- encouraging “math talk”

5. Writing for a purpose in math

6. Hands-on activities/centers- learning independently or collaboratively
