Literacy: Reading & Writing

Readers of all ages love to share their findings, whether it may be fiction or non-fiction prose. Developing the life-long habit of reading for pleasure is something that we as educators must promote. Too often, the love of reading is lost after the primary grades. This course will highlight the ways in which we can develop and sustain literacy in our classrooms. Participants will learn the shared reading approach. They will comprehend the skills necessary to achieve reading on all levels . Content area literary will be focused on, as well as various websites and annotated bibliography suggestions for teachers. Reading within the content areas will be addressed as well as a multitude of graphic organizers. A must for K-12 educators. ON-LINE (3 credits/45 hours) in-service credit only

Language is the human capacity for acquiring and using complex systems of communication. Between 6 and 8 million people in the United States have language impairments. Language impairment in a student directly affects his academic performance and ability to socialize with peers. In this course, receptive language impairment, expressive language impairment, auditory processing disorder, and aphasia will be defined and discussed. Classroom strategies will be reviewed. In addition, the emotional effects of language impairment on school-age children will be analyzed. This class is the second class in the series. Part 1 is not a prerequisite for part 2. Course Description: This course will focus on how to teach your students to write successfully no matter what subject you teach.  Educators will work on techniques and strategies to get your students to write well in all areas of study.  With writing being such an important skill, students should learn how to achieve and succeed with great writing.  This course is a must for all educators levels K-12.

Course #PDLI9080 (45 HOURS/3 GRADUATE CREDITS) ON-LINE Instructor: Kim Kittredge kkittredgeliips@gmail.com Course Description: This course will explore how to support our English Language Learners and our English as Second Language Learners in our mainstream classrooms.  We will how to provide daily instruction as an educator to fit the needs of the students in these language categories.  Since many of these students have either come from different countries or have just started to learn the language, it is necessary as teachers to provide them with a strong language background to guide them through their learning process.  Participants will discuss how to get started in your mainstream classroom providing the support needed for the ELL and ESL students, how to differentiate the work for them. Educators will collaborate and work on a multitude of language learning techniques and assessments for all learning styles.  Applicable all educators and staff K-12.

Course Description: This course is designed to provide the ESL, general education, and all subject area teachers with the skills necessary to teach students al all levels of language acquisition ho to make connections, ask questins, vsualize, infer, determine importace synthesize, monitor meaning and comprehension, and continue learning independently through guided texts and authors. A must for all educators grade K – 12.

Participating in philosophical discussions and Socratic type of learning is essential for 21st century learners. Enhancing one’s students to be motivated and think critically of the world around them is tantamount to the Common Core standards of learning in all subject matters. The study of the philosophy behind picture books and their authors captivates students and infuses morality and integrity into their worlds. In this course, teachers will be exposed to a plethora of children’s books from all disciplines. They will learn to critically analyze, judge, delineate, and closely comprehend the genre in order to devise pertinent lessons for their students. Teachers will walk away with a plethora of interdisciplinary lessons that collectively forge bonds between their learners. A must for K-12 educators. Participants will be able to: • Select from a wide range of children’s books in order to delve into philosophical ideas and current ELA research • Draw inferences from renowned picture book authors in order to instruct their students on pertinent philosophical issues • Enhance their classrooms via current research on literature in the classroom via ELA techniques/Social Studies techniques, and Science/Math strategies • Participants will be able to implement philosophical trends in their classrooms via picture books • Participants will be able to create lessons that integrate all aspects of literacy via children’s books • Participants will design a medley of critical thinking lessons that target their audiences via Common Core instruction Participants will complete activities, lessons, and design assessments that they will bring back to their students. They will be able to understand the inner workings of picture books and how they transcend classrooms and motivate students. Course Description:

Mastering the art of vocabulary instruction is tantamount to student success and must entice all learners. Vocabulary knowledge is the biggest predictor of student success. Within this course, participants will comprehend how to explicitly instruct vocabulary to their students. They will learn creative modalities that spark student interest and enable them to visualize concepts and relationships. Seven principles of vocabulary instruction will be explored, as well as evidence based literary strategies for all disciplines.
