Course Description: On a daily basis, teachers must deal with issues surrounding poverty and pedagogy. Many of our students confront a wide array of issues and arrive at school unprepared for the day ahead. A wealth of misconceptions arises as well, some of which tend to stifle our learners and disallow for success. In this course, teachers will learn how to recognize the root of these misconceptions, produce experiential and critical thinking activities for their learners, as well as develop lessons on equity and justice, all of which promote changes in attitude and empathy for all learners. This course is designed to equip all educators with the knowledge and skills to foster an emotionally engaging classroom. Skills such as leadership, communication and listening, positive thinking, student support, and team building all will be examined. Educators will share how to communicate not only with the students in their classrooms, but with administrators and colleagues. Communication is a complete building-wide plan. Educators will work towards sympathizing and building stronger relationships through empathy and empathetic strategies. Strategies such as “imagine self” and “imagine others” will be discussed. Educators will work on skills to deeply understand their students’ personal and social situations, and feel care and concern for them. Course Description:
Learning to work closely with our colleagues is tantamount to effective teaching. Learning the ins and outs of collaborative instruction not only assists teachers but students significantly. This class will instruct teachers as to how to nurture the co-teaching relationship and find a rhythm that works for everyone. Co-teaching structures of learning will be discussed, making the most of co-teaching partnerships, flexibility, rich expertise and experiences, communication, and best research practices will be discussed. Teachers will emerge with a wealth of strategies and websites for effective planning techniques.

Educators will discuss proper communication skills, collaboration techniques and cooperative learning strategies. This course will examine how we communicate (both verbal and non-verbal) to build a happy classroom. Conferencing with your students is a way to empower them to improve their skills by setting goals and then achieving them. Conferencing is also a great way to really get to individually know each one of your students. Educators will work on how plan conferencing times with your students in the classroom. Teachers will explore strategies for effective discussion skills, how to work towards educational goals set by each student, and how to plan your students’ success. Having the responsibility of being a role-model in one’s classroom is not for the faint of heart. Students today arrive with confused notions and beliefs that are anything but neutralized. Acknowledging differences in viewpoints and establishing a classroom procedure and repertoire helps students make sense of democratic values and focus on civic responsibility and critical thinking skills. In this course, teachers will learn to address and navigate students’ relationship with the world. They will develop lessons that engage their learners and direct them with critical thinking skills and help them to make sense of the world we live in. Do our students understand our lessons? All the time and effort and we put into them? There are so days when as educators we look out at our student's faces and are unable to truly gauge how much they understand.
Then, we also have those classes in which participation; the mere raising of a hand, seems like a chore. We seem only have those same few students providing answers every day while the others remain silent. While it is nice to know that these students are learning, we also want to be sure we are reaching each student in our classroom. This course offers ideas on how to model your daily instruction with learning opportunities for all students to actively participate and share. Students will find themselves wanting to get up and get involved and respond. Educators will learn a variety of strategies that will not only activate engagement, but also improve student learning overall.
