Unfortunately, the amount of time that students spend in unstructured play has diminished overtime. The average amount of recess in elementary schools is 20-30 minutes according to the CDC. By the time they reach high school, there’s scant evidence of any needed built-in breaks. This course will enable participants to find the modalities to structure unstructured time into their repertoire. They will hone in on current studies, research, and tactics to motivate their students via succinct physical and mental breaks. Activities such as mindfulness, stretching, and playful games will be covered, as well as technological games and activities to set them into motion for academics.

Bringing Characters to Life: Creative Projects for the Modern English ClassroomIt’s difficult – if not sometimes impossible – to motivate students to open their minds to literature. If the students found a way to relate to characters on a realistic level, they would be more willing to read and engage in class discussions. They could feel more ownership of the literature. Middle and high school English teachers enrolled in this course will explore creative ways to bring some of the most famous literary characters into the 21st century classroom.
