Course Description: Where do we start? How do we end? The beginning and the end of any lesson must be carefully considered when constructing lesson plans. What is the purpose of a measurable objective? Why must a closure clearly connect to the objective? These are key questions that must be regularly addressed, and doing so can be frustrating. Teachers enrolled in this course will focus on understanding and crafting purposeful objectives and operative closures, both as a means of facilitating effective lesson planning. | Course Description: Being a master of your content area is half the challenge of being an effective teacher. What is the other half? The delivery. The ability to execute your lesson plans, to keep your audience of students engaged and connected. There will always be students who assume that a film being shown equates to a free period, devoid of learning. And while there are some teachers who might feel the same, the fact remains that there is so much the film industry has to offer the world of education. With more and more streaming services available and improved classroom technology, incorporating films and/or film clips has never been easier. Moreover, some students are visual learners and can, therefore, benefit from seeing a visual representation of something being discussed in class. Teachers enrolled in this course will review the necessary checks to ensure that films are appropriately and effectively selected. Together, we will explore the best ways to incorporate these films into lessons that are engaging and purposeful.

Course Description
From the very moment that we enter the classroom, we create a definitive image of ourselves. First impressions are everything and encapsulate who we are and what students will glean from the course. Our body language, behavior, and diction are indicative of our teaching styles and our expectations of our learners. Educators are actors, putting on five shows a day, 900 shows a year, all which produce transformative learning from students. Delving deeply into the students’ psyche and learning styles is tantamount for both educators and students today and provides everyone with the opportunity to enhance their learning and make personal connections between their own experiences and those of the curriculum. Successfully incorporating a wealth of social emotional resources as well as delving into the science of learning is crucial and invaluable. In the end, all aspects of learning will be covered.
In this course, participants will learn everything there is to know about creating a successful environment that motivates students. They will explore various resources such as articles, interviews, readings, differentiated learning sites, lesson plans, and links to literary sites. They will research a variety of sources and decide which ones are engaging and fit into their curriculum. While testing is important, there needs to be a balance by teaching students the process by which they arrive at answers. This class will explore the use of active learning inside of your classroom where students can be directly involved in their own education. Goal of the Course: The goal of this course to collaborate with other teachers and create a plethora of resources that can be used inside of the classroom. This course will help create a positive environment and encourage students to retain information in an active way. Course Description:
School-wide and Classroom Practices is an integral component of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) programs. A part of SEL is the process of helping educators build their expertise and skills to lead their schools social and emotional learning initiatives regardless of their role in the building/district. One of the many components of SEL is cultivating adults' own social and emotional competencies.
When educators embody the same practices that they hope to teach their students, the outcomes for learners are maximized. Developing school-wide engagement activities for SEL provides opportunities for staff and students to engage in team building and learning activities that focus on this common goal. The development and implementation of school-wide activities creates teachable moments while reinforcing the core SEL components.

 | With the adoption of the CCLS one major instructional shift has been to incorporate more nonfiction into the classroom. As educators, one of our major goals is to prepare students to be college and career ready. Approximately ninety-five percent of daily work-related information is in expository form. Based upon this information, it is necessary for educators to teach students ways to navigate and comprehend this form of text.
This course will help teachers improve nonfiction instruction and expository reading comprehension with their students.

| Course Description: According to the most recent research on teacher effectiveness, instruction flourishes in a classroom environment that promotes a collaborative community. This course will provide an overview on the philosophy behind creating a classroom culture that fosters positive behavior. Participants will learn strategies for establishing classroom settings, routines, and expectations that encourage student voice, creativity, leadership, and effective teamwork. Educators will research strategies for constructive supervision, increasing student capacity and opportunity as well as methods for reducing negative behaviors. During this class, participants will explore technological resources to monitor and motivate student behavior. Educators will also learn how to write and use both a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) and a Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP) based upon data collection. Fluent reading is a sign of a proficient reader and is a major goal of literacy instruction. When readers are fluent, they are free from word recognition challenges and are able to fully focus on meaning and comprehension.
This course will explain fluency and the components of fluent reading in depth. Educators will learn key fluency terms including: phrasing, intonation, automaticity, and expression. Participants will learn how fluency develops and various methods/tools to assess/measure fluency. In addition, educators will research successful instructional strategies to implement within his/her own classroom. Teacher will gather many fluency lesson plans for immediate use with students. | The focus of this course will be to provide educators with an overview of the Next Generation Learning Standards recently adopted by New York State. Participants will have the opportunity to research and study the philosophy behind the new standards and the timeline for implementation. During this course, educators will research the ELA, Math, and Science standards appropriate to his/her grade level. In addition, educators will examine the differences between the Next Generation Learning Standards and the current Common Core Learning Standards. | Teaching in the 21st Century now requires educators to embrace technology. Smartphones, ipads, and tablets are expanding the learning experience like never before for teachers and students. In this course, participants will research hundreds of educational apps appropriate to his/her grade level and content area. Participants will become familiar with apps for both students and teachers which can be used inside and outside of the classroom. Student centered apps will help to make learning more engaging and interactive while developing a deeper understanding of content. The art and science of teaching requires a stress-free environment, one in which individuals are calm and comfortable within themselves and can articulate with ease. This course will enable participants to create this environment of presenting with their students. All content areas will be covered in terms of embracing the mindset of learning and the discipline. Strategies include movement trumping sitting, images trumping words, writing trumping reading, remembering the relevance of things.
