Gayle Meinkes-Lumia
Gayle Meinkes-Lumia has been teaching English Language Arts at the Brentwood School District for twenty-six years. She attended the University of Buffalo for her undergraduate degree, where she specialized in English Language Arts. She holds a Masters’ degree in English Literature and Secondary Education at Hofstra University, where she also instructs secondary education students. Gayle is a master teacher who is heavily involved in student success and teacher education. Gayle was the English Language Arts Staff Developer at Brentwood for two years, where she created innovative lessons and disseminated information to faculty and students. She has taught classes at LIIPS and the Brentwood Teacher Center for twenty years, developed lectures for the Suffolk Reading Council, written articles for the “Social Studies Docket”, and has been awarded, “New York State Educator of Excellence” in 2000. Last year, she additionally was awarded, “Teacher of the Year” in Brentwood. She has two children, a high school rising senior, taking all AP level courses and a Northeastern University Honors student aspiring to be a surgeon. In her spare time, Gayle develops new courses for LIIPS, is an avid reader, and devotes the majority of her time to her children.

 Rise to the Challenge – Designing Rigorous Learning that Maximizes Student Success
Course Description – Motivating students who have checked out to learning can be extremely stressful. Teachers need a blueprint for introducing more rigor into their classrooms while creating fun-filled activities that are critical thinking and inquiry based. Participants in this course will learn how to effectively address the distinct needs of their students that go beyond their comfort zones and push them toward success. A slew of activities will be completed including differentiated instruction, reading and writing in the content areas, interdisciplinary tactics, cross-cultural techniques, and current websites geared towards success.  Prioritizing our Children – The Impact of Screen Time on Childrens’ Mental Health
Course Description – The virtual lives of students during and post-pandemic has been extremely stressful. Balancing health, family, friends, schooling, and sanity has been anything but ideal. Excessive time in front of the screen has left many students devoid of inter-personal skills and has led to anxiety and depression. Life lessons and socialization skills need to be retaught and at the forefront of learning. This course will examine the implications that virtual instruction has had on students and will investigate the ways in which emotions, empathy, and well-being intertwine with the real lives of students. Teachers will learn how they can assist students in venturing back into the classroom and relearning the skills that were missed during the past year. A myriad of topics will be covered as well as lessons and social-emotional strategies. A must for K-12 educators!!!!!

 Persistence, Positivity, and Perseverance
Course Description: The three P’s of instruction are the driving forces for students’ successes. Ingraining this mindset in our learners creates lifelong skills. This course will explore the vast array of connections that teachers must foster in the classroom, including interdisciplinary ideals as: text to self, text to world, text to text. Teachers will be able to engage their learners in every discipline and bestow enlivened lessons into their worlds. Topics include creative writing, exploratory science, oral histories, mathematical manipulatives. All Next Generation standards will be covered. A must for K-12 Educators!!!
